SYMPTOMS

When you copy numbers from a Microsoft access 2002 database and paste them into Microsoft Excel 2002, the data type of the pasted numbers is text. They data appears as numbers, but sorts as text and are not available for formulas and functions.

RESOLUTION

Service pack information

This problem is corrected in Office XP Service Pack 3.

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Office XP update that contains this hotfix.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use the Paste Special command to paste the numbers in the Biff5 format.

To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the Edit menu, click Paste Special.
  2. Click Biff5 format, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
This problem was first corrected in Office XP Service Pack 3 and Office XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) for access 2002 Runtime.
